Dr. Lissy Jarvik, founding President of the Sousa Mendes Foundation Board of Directors, is one of the foremost geriatric psychiatry specialists in the world today. Rescued by Aristides de Sousa Mendes after her family fled her native Holland, she earned an M.D. from Case Western University and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. She is Professor Emeritus at UCLA and the author of over 350 publications. She was appointed Distinguished Physician by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, only the second woman and one of thirty-six physicians nationwide to be so honored at the time of her appointment. She is featured in the series "Changing the Face of Medicine" of the National Institutes of Health.
