UNHATE FOUNDATION EMPOWERS YOUNG ARCHITECT
TO REALIZE HIS DREAM CONSTRUCT

WTF: Work Towards Fairness is a built environment that unites us in learning the story of the Sousa Mendes family and the plight of the Sousa Mendes home, known as the Casa do Passal. WTF seeks to inspire us to rectify the injustices against Aristides de Sousa Mendes, and others, throughout the world.

Eric Moed recently graduated from the Pratt Institute School of Architecture in New York. That same year he learned that his family was saved during WWII by a righteous diplomat. Aristides de Sousa Mendes saved thousands by disobeying his government’s orders and granting visas to desperate refugees to escape into Portugal. Shortly thereafter Aristides was punished severely for his altruistic actions – his job and his family home, the Casa do Passal, were taken away from him, and the house descended into a state of ruin. Inspired by the story, Eric devoted his architectural thesis project to restoring that very home in Portugal with the intention of turning it into a Museum of Tolerance.

Shortly after presenting his thesis, Eric entered the “Unemployee of the Year” competition, sponsored by the UNHATE Foundation. He received a grant from the UNHATE Foundation to turn the proposal into a reality, which he calls “WTF: Work Towards Fairness.”

Work Towards Fairness is a semi-permanent installation in the form of a series of three pavilions at the entrance to the Casa do Passal. The construct seeks to share the Sousa Mendes story with the world; acting as a bridge between past and present, utilizing Aristides' heroic actions as an inspiration for future generations to get involved in humanitarian efforts.

A detailed exhibition will fill all three pavilions with materials focused on Holocaust education, the life and actions of Aristides de Sousa Mendes and the teaching of tolerance. The content of the exhibit was crafted closely with the Sousa Mendes Foundation, which includes direct descendants of Aristides de Sousa Mendes and the individuals whom he rescued.

WTF goes well beyond the scope of a simple architectural construct. It must result in a place that imbues dignity, fosters education and ultimately echoes the deeds of Aristides de Sousa Mendes in perpetuity.

Directed by Joël Santoni and starring Bernard Le Coq, this powerful film tells the true story of Aristides de Sousa Mendes — the Portuguese Consul in Bordeaux — who in 1940 defied the direct orders of his government and granted visas out of Occupied France to thousands of refugees. His courageous actions have been described as “the largest rescue action by a single individual during the Holocaust.” The screening schedule is below.

Monday, April 8, 2013 is Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. The full name of this day is Yom HaZikaron laShoah ve-laG’vurah (יום הזיכרון לשואה ולגבורה) which means "Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day" — also known as "Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day." In addition to remembering the millions of precious lives that were lost, let us honor the memories of those heroes who rescued untold numbers of refugees from the fires of hatred.

Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Portuguese Consul-General in Bordeaux during WWII — along with other rescuers — helped not just individuals and families, but humanity in general. Although many hundreds of thousands of people were spared thanks to acts of rescue, we will never know what could have been… what the millions of unique individuals who perished in the Holocaust and their eventual descendants might have contributed to the world, now and forever.

And so these heroes must be remembered and emulated. When we are confronted with hatred, bigotry, violence against people for no reason other than their ethnicity, sexual orientation, or their beliefs, we must remember that it is our responsibility to stand up, to speak up, to act against evil, and to protect the innocent.

The United Nations 2013 observance of the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust was built around the theme “Rescue during the Holocaust: The Courage to Care”.

The Sousa Mendes Foundation co-sponsored a presentation of the award-winning documentary film The Rescuers on January 23, as part of the United Nations program. Prior to the showing of the film, approximately 50 members of Sousa Mendes visa recipient families gathered in a circle inside the Visitor Centre, and had an opportunity to meet each other–as well as two grandchildren of the diplomat who came to their rescue: Louis-Philippe Mendes and Sheila Abranches.

After the screening of the film, Sousa Mendes visa recipient Léon MOED gave a personal and moving testimonial, and took questions along with director Michael King. Images of Léon MOED (from 1940 and the present) are featured in the video address by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon shown below, and the Sousa Mendes Foundation is among the prestigious organizations credited with thanks for the program.

United Nations to Screen “The Rescuers” to Mark Holocaust Remembrance Day
While Honoring Heroic Actions, Moral Courage of 12 Diplomats

The United Nations Department of Public Information will honor the heroic actions of twelve diplomats who showed moral courage and integrity to help save the lives of Jews during the Second World War with a screening of the award-winning documentary film The Rescuers on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. in the Economic and Social Council Chamber at New York Headquarters. Organized by the United Nations Holocaust Programme, in partnership with the Permanent Mission of the United States and the Sousa Mendes Foundation, the screening highlights the 2013 theme “Rescue During the Holocaust: The Courage to Care”.

Directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Michael King and produced by Joyce D. Mandell, The Rescuers takes the viewer on a journey to examine how the Holocaust unfolded in several countries in Europe.

The story is told through the eyes of Stephanie Nyombayire, a Rwandan anti-genocide activist who lost members of her family in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, and pre-eminent historian Sir Martin Gilbert who lost family members in the Holocaust. As they travel across fifteen countries and three continents interviewing survivors and descendants of the rescuers, Ms. Nyombayire and Mr. Gilbert explore the mystery of goodness in the face of danger.

Among those featured in the film are German diplomat and Nazi Party member Georg F. Duckwitz in Copenhagen; Americans Varian Fry and Hiram Bingham in Marseille, Japanese Consul Chiune Sugihara and Dutch diplomat Jan Zwartendijk in Kaunas; Turkish Consul Selahattin Ülkümen in Rhodes; British Captain Frank Foley in Berlin; Polish diplomat Henryk Slawik in Budapest; Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who helped coordinate the rescue efforts in Budapest in 1944 with Archbishop Angelo Rotta, who represented the Vatican; Consul Carl Lutz of Switzerland and Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Portuguese Consul-General stationed in Bordeaux who issued visas in defiance of his government’s orders, allowing safe passage of Jews to Portugal. Princess Alice, grandmother of Prince Charles, is also recognized for hiding a Jewish family in her palace in Athens.

Opening the event will be Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, Rosemary A. DiCarlo, Deputy Permanent Representative of the United States, and Joyce D. Mandell, the film’s producer. Following the screening, film director Michael King and Holocaust rescuee Leon Moed will participate in a panel discussion to be moderated by Maher Nasser, Director of the Department’s Outreach Division. Born in 1931 in Antwerp, Belgium, Mr. Moed escaped Nazi-occupied Europe with his parents and two siblings under the protection of a visa issued by Mr. Sousa Mendes.

October 25, 2012

Janice Arnold
Staff Reporter, Canadian Jewish News

Until a few years ago, Andrée Lotey knew little about her father who died when she was five, except that he was from France and had been in the watch business. There was always, she says, “an aura of mystery,” about her missing parent.

After her Québécoise mother died five years ago, Lotey, who teaches French literature and language at the Université de Montréal and Concordia University, learned a shocking secret about the man she knew as Jacques Lotey. She then embarked on a journey of self-discovery that continues to this day.

Clearing out her late mother’s house, Lotey discovered an old suitcase in the basement. It was crammed with yellowing papers – travel documents, work permits, identification of different sorts – most dating to World War II.

Piecing these bits of information together, Lotey found out that her father was born Jacob Lotenberg in Poland in 1899 (he was 25 years older than her mother) and was living in Paris when the war broke out. He was Jewish, and like all Jews in France, he faced deportation and probable death.

Lotey is still trying to uncover the details, but she now knows that he was among the possibly 30,000 refugees – at least a third of them Jews – who were saved by the Portuguese diplomat, Aristides de Sousa Mendes. The name meant nothing to her then.

She had the information confirmed two years ago by a French group devoted to commemorating the rare Holocaust hero.

Lotey needn’t have looked so far because “miraculously” there is a strong Montreal connection in the Sousa Mendes story, which is both a happy and tragic one.

Andrée Lotey shows one of the aged documents that led her to the discovery
of her father’s true identity.

She met his descendants living here and has become one of those who are working internationally to raise awareness of Sousa Mendes and the desperate flight of Jews from Vichy France.

Lotey, who thought she was an only child, learned that her father arrived in Montreal in 1941 with a wife (whom he later divorced) and daughter. In addition to importing Swiss watches, he was an owner of a Jewish deli on St. Lawrence Boulevard (now Schwartz’s). He died in 1965. Lotey’s half-sister, born in 1937, she recently found out, died in 1983 in San Francisco.

Discovering her Jewish heritage was astonishing to Lotey for another reason: she has been married for many years to a Jewish man.

As consul general in Bordeaux in the south of France, Sousa Mendes, a devout Christian, disobeyed the authoritarian, Nazi-sympathizing Antonio Salazar government. He issued thousands of visas in June 1940 to those trying to flee France after it fell to Germany through officially neutral Portugal.

Sousa Mendes would pay a heavy price for his moral courage: he was fired and effectively prevented from working again, as were his 15 children (two are still living.) He died in poverty and disgrace in 1954, and his sons and daughters scattered around the globe. In 1966, Yad Vashem honoured Sousa Mendes as one of the Righteous Among the Nations.

One of his sons, Philippe Mendes, settled in Montreal and, with his siblings, tried for years to have his father’s name cleared. It was not until 1988 – the year he died – that the Portuguese government apologized and rehabilitated the late diplomat, promoting him posthumously to ambassador.

Today, the mission of making his legacy better known is carried on by the Seattle-based Sousa Mendes Foundation, established three years ago.

Sousa Mendes’s grandson, the Montreal-born engineer Louis-Philippe Mendes, a commercial delegate for Hydro-Québec, leads the efforts of the family’s Montreal branch. With support from the Jewish community, the family was instrumental in having the City of Montreal name a park for Sousa Mendes in Côte des Neiges about 15 years ago. Louis-Philippe is vice-president and Lotey is a member of the foundation’s board of directors.

Its all-volunteer team seeks to identify and locate those saved or their descendants, through a variety of archival sources and personal testimonials. So far, it has a confirmed list of 3,000 names, available on its website, http://sousamendesfoundation.org. The foundation also sponsors educational programs and commemorative events projects.

Foundation researcher Jackie Schwarz, based in Antwerp, Belgium, who visited Montreal recently, said many of the visa recipients never knew who saved them. Descendants, like Lotey, may unwittingly be in possession of documentation that would be valuable in illuminating this chapter of history, and Schwarz hopes they will come forward. Seven members of her husband’s family received the Portuguese visas, but finding the proof has not been easy, said Schwarz, an experienced genealogist.

One well-known Montrealer who received a visa, along with his parents and sisters, is the Czechoslovakian-born Thomas Hecht.

A longer-term project for the foundation is raising funds for the restoration of the abandoned former Sousa Mendes family estate in Portugal, which it wants to make into a museum and memorial.

The imposing 19th-century Casa do Passal in the town of Cabanas de Viriato was forfeited to the bank in the 1950s by the impoverished family. It has been unoccupied ever since and has fallen into ruin. The foundation acquired it in 2001.

Lotey is helping organize a trip next June for visa recipients and their descendants that will retrace the route taken to escape Nazi oppression, made possible by Sousa Mendes.

Lotey, who has worked as a journalist for Radio- Canada, is also writing a detective story inspired by her real-life experience. The working title is Les rescapés de la valise verte (The Survivors of the Green Suitcase).

Louis-Philippe Mendes said, “Aristides de Sousa Mendes was neither a superhero endowed with super- natural powers nor a saint capable of working miracles, but rather a man who loved others and who believed in humanity above all else. He was a man who was truly alone during one of the darkest moments in history.

“Right until his last days, my grandfather remained true to himself, never regretting his altruistic deed.”
