The BOSSELAAR couple received visas issued by Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux on June 17, 1940 after having been explicitly denied visas by Salazar, the Portuguese head of state. Jean MATHIEU was issued a visa signed by de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux on June 19, 1940.

The BOSSELAAR/MATHIEU family crossed into Portugal. The BOSSELAAR couple sailed from Lisbon to New York on the ship Excalibur in September 1940. The MATHIEU family sailed to New York on the Excalibur in October 1940.
