About the Family

The FORTGANG family received visas 2475, 2476 and 2477 from Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux on June 20, 1940, signed by José de Seabra, the consul's secretary. They crossed into Portugal, where they resided in Curia and Porto.

Abraham, Chaja, Annette and Hella FORTGANG sailed from Lisbon to New York on the ship Nyassa in December of 1940.

Oskar FORTGANG traveled from Lisbon to New York on the vessel Nyassa in April 1941 under the name of Oskar BRAND.

Bernard, Estera and Suzanne FORTGANG traveled on the vessel Guiné from Lisbon to New York in May 1941.

Mozes (Max) and Maria (Dora) FORTGANG traveled from Lisbon to Cuba and eventually immigrated to the United States. They traveled under the surname of BRAND.

Rachel FORTGANG née BRAND perished in the Holocaust.
