About the Family

The BUXBAUM/POLLAK family received visas from Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux on June 16, 1940, after having been explicitly denied visas by Salazar, the Portuguese head of state.

The family crossed into Portugal and then sailed to Brazil on the vessel Cuyabá in August 1940. Celestina POLLAKOVA along with her daughter and son-in-law, Maria and Pavel BUXBAUM, then sailed on the Uruguay from Santos, Brazil to New York in February 1941.
