About the Family

The JANISZEWSKI and MINOGA families were explicitly denied visas by Salazar, the Portuguese head of state, in a telegram to Aristides de Sousa Mendes dated June 21, 1940. Nonetheless, they were able to reach Portugal, most likely because Sousa Mendes granted the needed transit visas.

Peisach JANISZEWSKI obtained an immigration visa to Brazil issued in Lisbon in September 1940. He traveled on the ship Angola, arriving in Brazil on September 19, 1940.

Peisach's sister Ida SCHAFFER and their cousins the MINOGA family escaped Nazi-occupied Europe via Marseille and traveled to Brazil on the vessel Cuyaba in October of 1940.
