“I could not have acted otherwise.” — Aristides de Sousa Mendes
The Sousa Mendes Foundation Educational Initiatives Committee has created a PowerPoint and Curricular Unit to aid teachers of grades 6-12 to teach about the Holocaust through the action of a hero and rescuer, Aristides de Sousa Mendes. These items, including images, videos, historical facts, lesson plans and a glossary, support teachers’ efforts to help students learn how the circumstances surrounding the actions of this hero, who was a Portuguese diplomat stationed in Bordeaux, France, led to his issuing thousands of lifesaving visas for desperate refugees. These materials, available to teachers free of charge, promote Holocaust awareness, compassion for refugees, and an understanding of moral courage.
You may request materials using the Sousa Mendes Foundation Educational Initiatives contact form. To access the form, click here.
