Camp Gibraltar, on the island of Jamaica, was a safe haven during World War II for Jews escaping Nazi-occupied Europe. Some of the refugees who found respite there were Sousa Mendes visa recipients. Accordingly, Aristides de Sousa Mendes will be honored during a reunion of the families who once called Camp Gibraltar home.
The American Jewish Committee and the Holocaust Museum Houston are jointly sponsoring a commemoration of Aristides de Sousa Mendes in conjunction with International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Louis-Philippe Mendes, grandson of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, will speak. All events will be held at the Holocaust Museum Houston.

In conjunction with the above events, the Sousa Mendes Foundation presents an exhibition of original artifacts, “Sousa Mendes and his Visas to Freedom.” On view will be passports with the original Sousa Mendes visas along with personal items of refugees rescued by Aristides de Sousa Mendes.

Event WebsitePresident Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal will posthumously award the Grand Cross of the Order of Liberty to Aristides de Sousa Mendes. The event will take place at the Sousa Mendes family home, Casa do Passal, in Cabanas de Viriato, Portugal. The date of April 3, 2017 is the anniversary of Sousa Mendes’s death in 1954.

In recognition of the special relationship between the city of New Bedford, MA and the story of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Jewish Federation of New Bedford will present a gift to the Sousa Mendes Foundation on the occasion of the annual Yom Hashoah service of the city of New Bedford at Buttonwood Park. Representing the Foundation will be Robert Jacobvitz, Chair of the Advisory Council, who played a key role in the early recognitions of Sousa Mendes in New Bedford and elsewhere in the 1980s. Representing the Jewish Federation will be Amir Cohen, Executive Director.
