Film Screening

The American Jewish Committee and the Holocaust Museum Houston are jointly sponsoring a commemoration of Aristides de Sousa Mendes in conjunction with International Holocaust Remembrance Day.  Louis-Philippe Mendes, grandson of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, will speak.  All events will be held at the Holocaust Museum Houston.

Ceremony “Remembering Aristides de Sousa Mendes” with Houston Diplomatic Consular Corps and remarks by Louis-Philippe Mendes.  Free and open to the public, but seating is limited.

In conjunction with the above events, the Sousa Mendes Foundation presents an exhibition of original artifacts, “Sousa Mendes and his Visas to Freedom.” On view will be passports with the original Sousa Mendes visas along with personal items of refugees rescued by Aristides de Sousa Mendes.

The New Jersey Film Festival presents Semyon Pinkhasov‘s must-see documentary about Aristides de Sousa Mendes.  In June 2013, Pinkhasov followed a group of visa recipient families, along with members of the Sousa Mendes family, as they embarked on a pilgrimage retracing their families’ footsteps of 73 years earlier.  They were “searching for Sousa Mendes” – looking for traces and clues of a lost history in an effort to understand their personal pasts.  Co-sponsored by the Rutgers University Centers for Global Advancement and International Affairs (GAIA Centers).  47 min. Dr. Michael Rie and the Jewish Federation of the Bluegrass present a screening of Disobedience: The Sousa Mendes Story.  Co-sponsored by the Moosnick Lectureship of the Lexington Theological Seminary and Transylvania University, and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lexington, Kentucky.

The Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine pays tribute to Aristides de Sousa Mendes with a screen of the award-winning docudrama, Disobedience: The Sousa Mendes Story on the occasion of Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day.  The screening will take place at the Michael Klahr Center. Refreshments will be served.

The International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies presents a screening of Disobedience: The Sousa Mendes Story.  Introducing the film and leading a Q&A is Robert Jacobvitz, Chair of the Sousa Mendes Foundation’s Advisory Council.

The film Disobedience: The Sousa Mendes Story returns to the historic State Cinema in Stamford, CT in a joint program of the Jewish Arts & Film Festival of Fairfield County and the Jewish Historical Society of Fairfield County.  Discussion following the film will be led by Joan Arnay Halperin, author of My Sister’s Eyes:  A Family Chronicle of Rescue and Loss During World War II.

Congregation Kol Ami presents a screening of the film Disobedience: The Sousa Mendes Story. Discussion following the film will be led by Dan Mattis, who received a visa from Aristides de Sousa Mendes in May of 1940 during his escape from Nazi-occupied Europe.
