About the Family
These visas were issued by Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux on June 16 and 18, 1940. Visas for "FRIBOURG, wife and mother" had been explicitly denied by Salazar, the Portuguese head of state.
The families went to the Dominican Republic and subsequently sailed to New York in two groups, on the ship Borinquen in August 1940 and on the Coamo in September 1940.
