About the Family

The DA SILVA SOLIS family received their visas from Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux on June 19, 1940.

They crossed into Portugal and subsequently sailed on the vessel Nea Hellas from Lisbon to New York in July 1940.

After the war they returned to Morocco and then to Amsterdam. Daniel DA SILVA SOLIS was a leader of the Portuguese-Israelite (Sephardic) Congregation in Amsterdam and of its famed library, the Ets Haim, which miraculously survived. Many of their relatives perished in the Holocaust.
