The DEUTSCH family received visas from Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux on June 17, 1940.
They crossed into Portugal and sailed on the vessel Almeda Star from Lisbon to Brazil in July 1940. They traveled on baptismal certificates under a quota for "Catholics of Jewish race."
