Jean-Michel FRANK was a French designer and cousin of diarist Anne FRANK. He crossed into Portugal, where he resided in Lisbon. He traveled from Lisbon to Argentina, and subsequently sailed from Brazil to New York in December 1940. William (Thad) LOVETT, a US citizen, crossed into Portugal and sailed from Lisbon to New York on the vessel Manhattan in July 1940.

Jean-Michel FRANK and Thad LOVETT are known to have spent time in Portugal with their contemporaries, Salvador DALI and Elsa SCHIAPARELLI.
