About the Individual
Rudolf HAMBURGER, a German Jew, was imprisoned in the Cours du Médoc internment camp in Bordeaux, France in June 1940. The entire camp requested and received visas from Aristides de Sousa Mendes.
In 1941 he crossed into Portugal and sailed from Lisbon to New York on the vessel Serpa Pinto in March of that year.
In the United States he changed his surname to HARVEY. He died in a United Airlines plane crash in 1948 that killed all crew and passengers on board.
