About the Family

Otto and Eric HAMMEL, German Jews, were imprisoned in the Cours du Médoc internment camp in Bordeaux, France in June 1940. The entire camp requested and received visas from Aristides de Sousa Mendes. The HAMMEL brothers received their visas on June 20, 1940.

They crossed into Portugal. In August 1940, they sailed on the vessel Quanza from Lisbon to New York in transit to Honduras. In November 1940, they sailed from Honduras to New Orleans on the ship Sixaola.
