About the Family

The HIRSCHKOWITZ family, from Belgium, were explicitly denied visas by Salazar, the Portuguese head of state, in a telegram sent to Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux, France on June 8, 1940.

The family remained in France, and traveled to Nice. From there they traveled to Portugal, entering in January of 1941, and resided in Porto.

The family then sailed from Lisbon to New York on the vessel Guine in April 1941.
