About the Family

Leon KUBOWITSKI, later Aryeh KUBOVY, was a great Zionist leader. He and his family are presumed to have received visas from Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux in June of 1940. His son Michel was born in Bordeaux at that time.

They crossed into Portugal and in October of 1940 sailed on the ship Nea Hellas from Lisbon to New York. Later they emigrated to Israel, where he became director of Yad Vashem.
