About the Family

The SCHIPPER family received a visa from Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux on May 29, 1940 after having been explicitly denied by Salazar, the Portuguese head of state.

The family crossed into Portugal. In January 1942 they sailed on the Serpa Pinto from Lisbon to Jamaica, where they were interned at Camp Gibraltar, a refugee camp, for the duration of the war. They subsequently emigrated to the United States.
