About the Family

The numbered visas were issued by Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux on June 18, 1940. Sousa Mendes requested a visa for Joseph SLYPER in a telegram to Salazar, the Portuguese head of state, but the latter denied it in a return telegram.

The Slyper family, Dutch citizens, crossed into Portugal. Ezechiel and Rachel SLYPER subsequently sailed on the Quanza from Lisbon to New York in August 1940.
