About the Family

Henri and Georges TORRÈS received their visas from Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux on June 16 and June 17, 1940.

Henri TORRÈS went from Lisbon to Brazil, and from there boarded the vessel Argentina in March 1941 to New York, where he became a leading figure of the French expatriate community. His son Georges TORRÈS did not use his Portuguese visa but went from France to England, then to Brazil to join his father, and returned to London at age 18 to join General Charles de Gaulle's army. He was killed in action on October 8, 1944, leaving behind a pregnant young wife, Sousa Mendes visa recipient Tereska TORRÈS née SZWARC.
