About the Individual

On January 12, 1940, Aristides de Sousa Mendes requested permission from the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to grant a visa to Alice VIGDERHAUS, a stateless refugee born in Vienna, in Bordeaux, France.

She remained in France, and boarded the vessel Champlain in Saint-Nazare in May of 1940, bound for New York.
