About the Family
The WESSELY couple received visas from Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux in June 1940 after having been explicitly denied by Salazar, the Portuguese head of state.
They crossed into Portugal and traveled to Cuba. They subsequently traveled on the vessel American Flag Toloa from Havana to New Orleans in October of 1940.
