About the project

The Sousa Mendes Refugee Suitcase is an educational initiative to bring the Sousa Mendes story into the classroom. Each suitcase contains a class set (25 copies) of the book My Sister’s Eyes by Joan Arnay Halperin telling the gripping true story of one family saved by Aristides de Sousa Mendes in 1940. The suitcase also includes a Curricular Unit for grades 6-12 to facilitate classroom use.
