In 2012, while research her book, My Sister’s Eyes, Joan Halperin learned of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, his heroism and his connection to her family’s rescue from Nazi-occupied Europe.

Camp Gibraltar, on the island of Jamaica, was a safe haven during World War II for Jews escaping Nazi-occupied Europe.  Some of the refugees who found respite there were Sousa Mendes visa recipients.  Accordingly, Aristides de Sousa Mendes will be honored during a reunion of the families who once called Camp Gibraltar home.

Monique Rubens Krohn, SMF Board secretary, speaks about how Aristides de Sousa Mendes saved her family.  In the presentation, she describes the Foundation’s Journey on the Road to Freedom tour and raises thought-provoking and timely questions about refugees and moral choices.
