Lecture: Journey to Freedom
Monique Rubens Krohn, SMF Board secretary, speaks about how Aristides de Sousa Mendes saved her family. In the presentation, she describes the Foundation’s Journey on the Road to Freedom tour and raises thought-provoking and timely questions about refugees and moral choices.

Houston Honors Aristides de Sousa Mendes
Refugees in Lisbon, 1940
The American Jewish Committee and the Holocaust Museum Houston are jointly sponsoring a commemoration of Aristides de Sousa Mendes in conjunction with International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Louis-Philippe Mendes, grandson of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, will speak. All events will be held at the Holocaust Museum Houston.

Ceremony “Remembering Aristides de Sousa Mendes” with Houston Diplomatic Consular Corps and remarks by Louis-Philippe Mendes. Free and open to the public, but seating is limited.

In conjunction with the above events, the Sousa Mendes Foundation presents an exhibition of original artifacts, “Sousa Mendes and his Visas to Freedom.” On view will be passports with the original Sousa Mendes visas along with personal items of refugees rescued by Aristides de Sousa Mendes.

The New Jersey Film Festival presents Semyon Pinkhasov‘s must-see documentary about Aristides de Sousa Mendes. In June 2013, Pinkhasov followed a group of visa recipient families, along with members of the Sousa Mendes family, as they embarked on a pilgrimage retracing their families’ footsteps of 73 years earlier. They were “searching for Sousa Mendes” – looking for traces and clues of a lost history in an effort to understand their personal pasts. Olivia Mattis presents the research project of the Sousa Mendes Foundation to identify, locate and contact individuals and families that received visas from Aristides de Sousa Mendes in the Spring of 1940.
Presidential medal awarded to Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Portugal
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal will posthumously award the Grand Cross of the Order of Liberty to Aristides de Sousa Mendes. The event will take place at the Sousa Mendes family home, Casa do Passal, in Cabanas de Viriato, Portugal. The date of April 3, 2017 is the anniversary of Sousa Mendes’s death in 1954.
