In 2012, while research her book, My Sister’s Eyes, Joan Halperin learned of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, his heroism and his connection to her family’s rescue from Nazi-occupied Europe.

Exhibition including original artifacts such as dolls, passports, and identification cards carried by Sousa Mendes visa recipients as they fled Nazi-occupied Europe via Portugal with help from Aristides de Sousa Mendes.

Camp Gibraltar, on the island of Jamaica, was a safe haven during World War II for Jews escaping Nazi-occupied Europe.  Some of the refugees who found respite there were Sousa Mendes visa recipients.  Accordingly, Aristides de Sousa Mendes will be honored during a reunion of the families who once called Camp Gibraltar home.
