Proud Jewish Boy — The Story of Herschel Grynszpan

On November 7, 1938, 17-year-old Herschel Grynszpan shot Nazi diplomat Ernst vom Rath in Paris, providing the pretext for Kristallnacht. In Proud Jewish Boy, acclaimed Israeli director Isri Halpern traces Herschel’s journey from poverty in Germany to his arrest in France and the Nazi show trial that never was. Combining rare interviews, archival footage, and illustrations by the artists of Waltz with Bashir, the film investigates the complex motives behind this famous murder.

MEET THE SPEAKERS

Jonathan Kirsch (left) is the author of The Short, Strange Life of Herschel Grynszpan: A Boy Avenger, a Nazi Diplomat, and a Murder in Paris. He is a publishing and intellectual property attorney based in Los Angeles, an expert witness on publishing industry matters, and an Adjunct Professor on the Faculty of New York University’s Professional Publishing Institute. He is also a book review columnist for The Los Angeles Times and the author of numerous other books in the fields of law and history.

Dr. Jud Newborn (right) was the Founding Historian of New York’s Museum of Jewish Heritage and is co-author of the acclaimed Sophie Scholl and the White Rose. He was awarded his PhD with Distinction by the University of Chicago following three years of adventurous fieldwork, including hunting down former SS officers and working undercover during communist martial law in Poland. He was honored with the Anne Frank Center’s “Spirit of Anne Frank Award” and is the two-time Emmy Award-winning Producer of Special Programs for Long Island’s Cinema Arts Centre.

Isri Halpern (left) established himself as one of the country’s leading documentary filmmakers. He has produced, directed, and edited nine feature-length documentaries that explore untold stories and figures from the margins of Israeli society and Jewish history. His latest film, Proud Jewish Boy, tells the story of Herschel Grynszpan and is the result of more than ten years of research and production. The film won Best Documentary at the Haifa International Film Festival, the Israeli Film Awards, and the Atlanta International Film Festival.
